The largest PT (Patrol Torpedo) Boat base was also located nearby the island. About 100 thousand American servicemen were assigned in Calicoan and its surrounding areas. In October 1944, hundreds of US and Japanese warships clashed off the shores of Calicoan in what became known as the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval engagement in the world history. On Nov. 10, 1978, Proclamation No. 1801 was issued declaring Guiuan, Eastern Samar as a Tourist Zone & Marine Reserve under the administration and control of Philippine Tourism Authority (P.T.A.)
LOCATION
Calicoan Island is a prime development strategically located in Calicoan Island,Brgy. Ngolos, Guiuan, Eastern Samar, Philippines. GETTING THERE
From Manila you can take a plane to Tacloban City. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines both fly to Tacloban City 3 times a day, it is estimated to be a 60 minutes flight. From Cebu you can either take a plane, a boat or a bus. Air Philippines flies to Tacloban City every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The flight takes approximately 30 minutes. Philtranco has a daily bus route to Tacloban City, which takes about 22 hours.
